Stephen Sanchez started on Tiktok with his song “Lady by the Sea”, and now has two full albums and a legion of followers. His second album “Easy on my Eyes” has a slight change in tone with him leaning into folk music.

This playlist is about Afrobeat; music from West Africa combined with Western Jazz, American funk, soul influences and calypso. The beats along will shake from one side to another. Afrobeat was developed in Nigeria in the late 1960s by Fela Kuti. I listen to Afrobeat because it’s a global palatable sound and aesthetics which represents the spirit of modern Africa.

Although Silk Sonic has only been making music as a group for a year, they have gotten a lot of notoriety, and their debut album was 2021’s album of the year. Much of their success can be attributed to Bruno Mars, who had a successful career before making the group with his friend Anderson Paak. The album “Evening with Silk Sonic” has a 70’s groovy vibe to it, and the way the songs are arranged tell an exciting story.
